Esphyr Slobodkina (1908-2002) was a celebrated avant-garde artist and author.

She was among the first female American artists to explore abstractioand the

first to use collage in American storybooks. She is best known as the author and

illustrator of the classic children's book Caps for Sale, which was first published in

1940 and has sold over 2 million copies.

Born in Siberia, Slobodkina studied art in Russia and China before immigrating

to the United States in 1928. She resided in New York City and Great Neck

for many years before moving to Glen Head in 1999. Her new home became

a mini-museum, where guests could view more than 200 works of art, handmade

dolls and jewelry, and a complete collection of her children’s storybooks.

The museum closed in 2012 but the Slobodkina Foundation continues to build upon

her creative achievements. For more information about Esphyr Slobodkina and her work,
