The hamlet of Glenwood Landing was once known for its beachfront hotels and shipbuilding yards. Industry and manufacturing also played a role in its history. At one time, 111 Glenwood Landing Road was the home of a bustling glass bottling company. Mineral waters, ginger ale, seltzer and beer were all bottled at a factory run by resident George Sessler.
Sessler moved to Glenwood Landing from Manhattan in the early years of the 20th century. He ran the bottling plant with his brothers, Adolph and William, until his death in 1933. His son, George Jr, took over the family business for a short time before closing the plant. Bottles with the Sessler imprint still turn up now and then at local yard sales and antique stores.
