On September 6th, 2023, the work of constructing new Gold Coast Public Library began. Site-clearing, including the demolition of an existing brick house on the property, was the first visible sign that this overgrown, mostly-vacant lot would soon be transformed into a vibrant community center.
The bricks that were used in the construction of that house had been manufactured just a few yards away. The site of the new library and much of the adjacent property along Glen Head Road was – until the late 1930s – a brick manufacturing business known as the Post Brick Company. The company, which at its peak employed fifty-five people, was capable of producing up to 25 million clay bricks each year. Much of the pre-WWII brick construction in this district and all of Nassau County made use of bricks inscribed with the “POST” stamp.
At the Board of Trustees’ urging, the construction crews have successfully preserved a significant number of POST bricks which will be later displayed on the new property as a link to the history of the library grounds.
